Powell began his career in the cable and communications industry in 1983 and worked for numerous companies including GE Cablevision, Futurevision, and TCI Cablevision. In 1993, Powell founded his own company, Pyramid Construction of Virginia, Inc., to perform outside plant infrastructure services throughout the state of Virginia.
In 1995, Powell sought the advantages of teaming up with a larger company and sold his business to S&N Construction, Inc., which he later led as President and CEO through the holding periods of private equity firms Wingate Partners (2002 – 2012) and Sun Capital (2012 – 2018). Powell repurchased the construction assets of the business from Sun Capital in 2018 to form the Company in conjunction with its current leadership team.
Powell and team grew the business by 300 percent over the next 5 years. In November 2023, Powell oversaw the recapitalization of S&N by partnering with Tower Arch Capital, a private equity firm based in Salt Lake City UT, with a proven track record of success. This new partnership has led to S&N expanding market share into new states with the potential for exponential growth.
Powell has been recognized by many organizations for his leadership and business accomplishments and was inducted into the Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association Hall of Fame in 2014.
Davis started with S&N in 2006 as a field supervisor with no prior industry experience. Through his own efforts of learning, adapting and hard work, he has excelled in several roles at S&N with increasing responsibility and was promoted to Chief Executive Officer of the Company in early 2023.
Sean’s broad vision and analytical skills make him an excellent fit to carry on Allen Powell’s direction for the Company. Sean is respected within the Company and by outside organizations due to his personable, caring nature and his ability to develop relationships with persons regardless of stature.
Davis holds business/contractors licenses for S&N in West Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and a portion of the Virginia license.
Tolley began his career in the infrastructure construction industry with MasTec in 1994. He joined the S&N team in 2004 and has shown an exceptional ability to adapt to unusual needs, think strategically and develop creative solutions for customers. In recognition of his leadership and innovative thinking, he received the Wingate Partners “Beasley Award” in 2006 for leadership and excellence given annually by the Wingate Partners private equity firm in memory of William Beasley III.
Through his executive-level interactions, customer interactions, problem solving and interpersonal skills, Tolley has excelled in many roles within the Company during his 19-year tenure and was named Chief Operating Officer in early 2023.
Krutul has 45 years of accounting and finance experience in a wide range of industries, including public accounting, international manufacturing, financial services, and heavy highway construction. Krutul’s prior experience includes serving as the Chief Accounting Officer for an international manufacturer, where he was responsible for all accounting and financial reporting, including SEC compliance, after the company completed its IPO. He also guided the accounting, tax, and financial reporting functions for an emerging company in the financial services industry as it grew from a $15 million operation to a $100 million business that became part of S&P Global Market Intelligence.
Before joining S&N in 2018, Krutul served as Controller for a group of four construction companies in the general contracting, private development, and VDOT road and bridge construction industries. Since joining S&N, Krutul has directed the development of staff and accounting and finance processes to facilitate the rapid growth of the Company.
Krutul holds a B.S. in Accounting from Lehigh University and an MBA from Loyola University of Maryland. He is a CPA and a CMA and is a member of the American Institute of CPA and the Virginia Society of CPAs.
Gregory started with S&N in 2015 as the Application Development Manager. Since then James has held various positions within the company as Director of Application Development and Support, Sr. Director of IT Services, Chief Information Officer, and was recently promoted to Chief Technology Officer in early 2023. Prior to coming to S&N, James's worked in the public safety sector as an Applications Development/QA leader for Sungard Public Sector.
Gregory graduated from college with degrees in both Computer Programming and Network Engineering. Additionally, he holds various certifications within the IT industry and brings over twenty years of hands on experience and leadership to this position.
Powell started in the infrastructure construction industry in 2011. His hard work and innovation led him to start AAP1, LLC (“AAP”) in 2015. Powell’s reputation, dedication, and the quality of his team’s work led to AAP growing to become one of the largest direction drilling companies in central Virginia.
After S&N was created in 2018, Powell sold his interests in AAP to the new S&N entity and became a Project Manager with S&N and a Board Member of AAP. Powell has been very successful in managing both in-house and subcontracting crews for these affiliated entities and was promoted to VP of Underground Construction for S&N in early 2023.
Haney is a rare breed in the construction industry with both technical and operational knowledge of all work functions. He also represents the S&N commitment to recognizing a certain work ethic and developing those employees by providing ever challenging assignments. Haney started working in the communications construction industry in 1996 as a laborer and was promoted to crew Foreman in 2003 after proving his knowledge of both aerial, lineman, buried and underground construction operations and equipment.
Haney proved his managerial capabilities during the largest nationwide fiber optic build in communications history as a local manager on the Verizon FTTP project in 2010 where he was responsible for coordinating and placing fifteen miles of buried pathway a week. This mileage does not include aerial path creation of 729,000 feet weekly. During the FTTP Project between 2010 and 2012 Travis directly supervised twenty-two field supervisors with an overall workforce exceeding six hundred workers. In the Fall of 2012, Travis was recognized for his commitment to customer relations, safety and damage prevention by the Company President and promoted to Regional Manager Construction.
As delivery of Broadband services to Rural America continues into the second decade of the 21st century, along with the company’s operational footprint, we continue to provide opportunities for our top performers. Haney's knowledge, leadership, and contributions in developing direct reports led to his most recent promotion to Vice President of Operations.
Gibson joined S&N in 2015 to oversee our growing Fiber Services division. His commitment to bringing fiber connectivity to rural areas made him the perfect fit. Since then, Gibson has been instrumental in growing our fiber services offerings to include fiber splicing, testing, design, and technology education.
Prior to joining S&N, Gibson served as the Technology Director for Clay County Schools in Hayesville, NC. During his tenure, he was a major contributor to the e-NC Connectivity Initiative for Clay County and the Western North Carolina Education Network projects.
Deeply interested in bringing young people into our industry, Gibson currently serves as a content contributor and an instructor for the Fiber Broadband Association’s Fiber Technician Training program and works closely with numerous regional training cooperatives.
Gibson holds a bachelor’s degree from Western Carolina University in Education, a master’s degree in education from Morehead State University, and has completed the Chief Technology Officers Program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
Steve has held numerous positions throughout his 25+ year career in the underground construction and the utility locating business. After graduating high school, he served in the United States Marine Corp Reserves from 1995 to 2001, while working in the underground utility excavation industry directional drilling. Starting his career as a locate technician in 1999 in Richmond, Virginia and working his way to director of operations his experience encompasses all facets of what the utility industry consists of. Some of his passions include keeping up with industry standards regarding training, safety, quality control, claims litigation and the daily operations. Roark has also been involved with the VA State Corporation Commission attending his first meeting in 2002 and currently serving for 13 years on the VA SCC Advisory Committee. Roark has served a variety of utility owners and individualized departments while employed within the locate industry. The area in which he has most excelled is in building partnerships with the customers by developing and implementing a sound operation by creating robust damage prevention programs. Roark has cultivated partnerships nationally involving many of the country’s largest utilities and looks forward to fostering those relationships and continue to evolve as an innovative and effective leader and partner for years to come.
Butchers attributes include, but are not limited to, his overall contributions to the power industry for the past 35 years. He has served as a line worker, held various management positions throughout his tenure and prides himself on the value of safety instruction. Butcher has nurtured relationships within the industry via his personable nature, and extremely positive attitude. Butcher comes to us from great hands as well, serving over the past four years as Manager of Safety Training for the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives. We’re looking forward to working with Butcher and his support of the S&N vision to set the standard for integrity, safety and quality within the power space.
